Lampa stołowa Akari jest częścią lekkich rzeźb Akari, zaprojektowanych w 1951 roku przez amerykańskiego japońskiego artystę. Wybrał nazwę „ Akari ”dla tych obiektów, słowo, które po japońsku oznacza „ światło”, kojarzące się zarówno z oświetleniem, jak i fizyczną lekkością.
Inspiracją do zaprojektowania jego świateł jest wizyta w japońskiej wiosce rybackiej Gifu, obserwowanie rybaków przy pracy.
